CodeDay is a series of weekend-long events which reach middle-through-high-school students with no prior interest in tech careers and provides welcoming and diverse opportunities for them to explore a future in a tech career. The events are hosted regularly throughout the year, primarily in-person at partner technology companies and colleges.
Each CodeDay starts with students proposing their own app or game idea, and then working together to create them with the help of technology industry mentors. Students bring their existing creative knowledge (e.g. creating art for a game) and mentors help them learn to use industry skills to bring their ideas to life.
Throughout the weekend, mentors host individual conversations with students, provide tours of the hosting company’s offices, and conduct talks about careers in the industry.
We also host fun challenges to help students explore multiple careers, such as a 30-minute “big data challenge”. At the end, students present what they made in-person and create online “showcase” pages to share with friends.
