Goals
- Introduce the volunteer to the CodeDay community
- Learn about their interests and skills
- Find a volunteer opportunity for them (or come up with a new one!)
- Answer any questions that they may have
Before Call
- 📧 Find and review their volunteer form submission
- Submission should be in an email on Front
- Are they a new or returning volunteer?
- Did they list any specific interests or volunteer positions?
- 📋 Review the current list of volunteer opportunities
- Link: click here
- Are there any open volunteer opportunities that match their interests?
- If not, what are some potential new opportunities?
During Call
- 👋 Introduce yourself and briefly explain the purpose of the call
- Keep it simple and informal - the call is meant to be a casual chat
- 💻 Walk through creating their CodeDay account and joining the Discord server
- 🧩 Ask them about their interests and skills
- What types of projects have they worked on before?
- Examples: school clubs, other volunteer organizations, personal hobbies
- What are they interested in working on now?
- (important to ask this, in case their current interests are not the same as their past experiences)
- 🔍 Find (or create!) a volunteer opportunity that fits well
- Share them the list of volunteer opportunities (link here)
- Ask them to pick one - not the other way around
- Feel free to suggest some matching projects, based on their interests/skills, but they should have the final say on picking a project
- No matching opportunity? No problem, create a new one!
- Brainstorm ideas with them, or if they already have an idea, discuss it
- 📅 Discuss and sketch out a plan for completing the project
- Set an approximate deadline and establish some checkpoints as needed
- Deadline should not be rushed - be accommodating of school, other obligations, etc.
- Keep it casual (we are not there to micromanage them)
- ❓Ask for and answer any questions that they might have
- Let them know that they can reach out to you at anytime
- If needed (i.e., their project is particularly difficult or important), schedule follow-ups
